konomi wa sasayaku papa no kotoba
In the palm of my small hand, one
rotten fruit is held tight
Small footprints dash across one
meadow’s interior

The two of us, Dad and I, gathered them,
holding tight to the precious fruits
Again this year, a boy dashes alone
across the height of autumn

In my small heart, there is always
a happy autumn overflowing
The wind, a completely clear sky,
memories of a warm father, and
a boy who truly lived
This wide world, and things belonging to you
“Again this year, autumn has come”
--the fruits are whispering the words of my father

Song info: Originally from NHK's "Minna no Uta" program. Japanese lyrics were written to music taken from Bizet's "La jolie fille de Perth" opera (the song "Serenade"), and the song was first performed by Teruko Ooda in 1971. Two other covers have been made, one by Masako Saitou and one by Fumiko Kanbara.
